Getting Around

Driving

Residents of California are required to hold a California driver license in order to drive. To get a license, you will need to go to the DMV to submit an application. You must provide residency documents and identification, and pay the application fee. Depending on your situation and experience on the road, you may need to pass a vision exam, a knowledge test, and/or a driving test. Before going to the DMV, you must schedule an appointment online.

OCTA Bus

The Orange County Transportation Authority runs a bus network around Orange County. UCI staff are permitted to get a University Pass, which provides unlimited travel on all OCTA buses at any time. Passes are valid from July 1 to June 30 of the following year. To obtain one, please visit the Transportation and Distribution Services Office in the Public Services Building (corner of Pereira Dr. and East Peltason Dr.).

Note: The University Pass is not available to anyone holding a parking permit.

Routes that go by the University Center are 59, 79, 167, 178, and 473. Only route 79 operates on the weekend. For more information, please visit the OCTA website.

Anteater Express Shuttle Bus

A shuttle bus service is available to take you around campus and the surrounding area during the academic year. Only some services operate during the summer. Most routes are free, but some require you to pay a fee. For more information, please visit the Anteater Express website.

Medical Center Shuttle

This is a free shuttle service provided for members of the UCI community. It runs on a continuous loop between the Lot 80 carpark at UCI Health Sciences, UCI main campus admin circle, and the Medical Center in Orange. You must show your UCI ID when boarding. For more information and a detailed schedule, please visit the UCI Transportation page.

Biking

Biking is an excellent alternative for you to get around. If you choose to ride your bike to UCI, you must register your bike. The registration is free, and helps to prevent theft. There are restrictions on where you can ride at UCI. For more information on riding on campus, please visit the bikeUCI page.

The City of Irvine website has maps showing the bikeways in and around Irvine, as well as other information relating to owning a bike.
